Gateway Blonde Ale

4.7% alc./vol., 1 L plastic bottle
Gateway Brewing Company
Trenton, Ontario, Canada

DSCF1287Hooray for local beer!  Until now, I had no reason to visit Trenton, the “gateway to the Trent-Severn Waterway” that produces Gateway beer.  This is not to be confused with the 20 or so other places named Trenton.  The Gateway Brewery opened its doors there on July 28 of this year, but really Gateway is an offshoot of the more established Loyalist Brewers where you would brew your own.  This beer is sold as “take out” at the brewery…there’s no bar code on the bottle so you know there’s no outside sales.  Should you get one?  If you are from Trenton or anywhere near Trenton, absolutely!  You really should support your local businesses.  I wouldn’t drive there from Ottawa to get one, but it’s not bad.  It’s a bit darker than you expect for a blonde.  It’s a bit flat, so stay away if you have a belching contest coming up.  Gateway Blonde does not have much in the hops department…if you prefer lager, than this is the ale for you!  For me, I think a smidge more hops would seal the deal…just a smidge.
