If you’re wondering where I’m getting these Australian brands from, I get them from a friend who just returned from a trip to the other side of the world. This one in particular was a proud acquisition, and he’s wondering what I think. What the heck is a “bright ale”? It’s a bright, sparkling, clear yellow ale that pours with a thick, creamy head. It’s very refreshing, with a light, crisp flavour that delivers a lot of citrus notes in the bouquet and the finish. As if that wasn’t enough, the company logo is a little fat-faced cherub carrying a big frosty mug of beer. Although it’s only a tiny third of a litre, it’s labelled as “1.2 standard drinks”. In Australia, a standard drink is 10 mg of alcohol. In Canada, this beer is less than one standard drink, since our standard here is a more reasonable 13.5 mg of alcohol. I need 375 ml of this beer to make my Canadian standard drink, but I could drink more. To all those of you who drink from big bottles and cans: drink smaller, drink better, and drink more.
