Wow, beer brewed from “soba” sounds very exotic! Oh wait, that’s just the Japanese name for buckwheat. Wow, Japanese beer sounds somewhat exotic! Oh wait, this “Japanese” beer comes from Oregon. Still, buckwheat is pretty interesting because it’s not actually wheat or even grass, making buckwheat gluten-free. Buckwheat is a flower, with a seed that’s full of starch and it can be malted to produce sugar. Rogue puts some other malts in there too, so this particular beer is NOT gluten-free. It’s a rather odd beer, too. It’s certainly light. It doesn’t quite taste like a barley or a wheat beer, but it sort of does. The hops lend some very herbaceous notes to the taste. I’m trying to like it, but like Yoda says, “do or do not, there is no try”. This beer is demanding a food match, maybe something light but a bit tangy such as a green salad. I don’t have a snack handy, darn it. It’s not a great beer for drinking on its own.
