DSCF2018Sleeman Clear is a “low-carb” beer.  Carbohydrates are, as the name suggests, mixtures of carbon and the stuff in water, hydrogen and oxygen.  In the right combination, these chemicals make up sugar, starch, and fibre.  I think we’re talking about sugar here…I have yet to try a high-fibre beer.  Carbs are energy, so reducing the carbs both reduces the food energy and the nutritional value of a food or a beer.  Sleeman Clear has only 2.5 g of carbohydrates and 90 calories, whereas a typical beer has 12 g carbohydrates and 150 calories (varying greatly by brand and style).  So for one-fifth the sugar, do I get one-fifth the flavour?  Sadly, yes.  This is beer-flavoured fizzy water.  Type 2 diabetics can drink it, but if you’re in good health and at the appropriate weight you should drink something else.  Like a beer, maybe.
